Mike, can you describe the general area where the house was located that had the surveillance camera? No worries if you don’t want to comment for personal reasons. I know the video has said to be worthless of evidence. I’m just curious if it was a house directly in front of them, down the road, or on the cul-de-sac?

The neighbor wants to remain anonymous. There are two camera angles. 1. From the 2nd Floor eave aiming down to see who would be entering a side gate. 2. One under the eave at mezzanine level (Approx. 9′) to see who’s at the front door. Both… cameras are for home security, but are motion activated. The lights of the Isuzu Trooper triggered the system to turn on, and the top of the wheel down is all that is shown. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE WHO WAS INSIDE.
What about the cell phone pings can there be any track from the cell phone towers any cameras on the 15 or local gas stations how long was the trooper in the driveway was the family waiting outside for the trooper seems like this was a quick abduction I believe the trooper was left that close to the border to throw people off and what about other people out there who had a family member put in witness protection how did it go down was it a quick getaway like this or do they have time think about it a day or 2
Cell Phone pings can only be done when the phone are on. At the point that the SDSD got involved was 11 days later. Once the phones are off or dead, they cannot be pinged. The call from Joey’s phone at 8:28pm to Chase Merritt was from a local tower in Fallbrook. This is exactly how the SDSD has explained it to me. They believe that Joey’s phone was in Fallbrook the night of Feb 4, 2010, but it would be an assumption to know who was with him at the time of the call. Of course it’s logical to think that it was all four of them, but without a confirmed sighting, it’s impossible to know.
So how long was the convo with chase is chase willing to take a poly graph on what was said in the call was there a call from joey to summer to let her know he was on his way home the night of the fourth were was chase cell pinged at time of the call was he around the fallbrook area was joeys cell in the house or no how about web records on the cells since now adays cell phones are like lap tops any weird searches on any of the cells my heart goes out to u mikey I watch disappeared on my dvr everynight trying to piece this together hang in there
Mike, I have two brothers that surf. If Joe had to take off for the safety of his family, and say he did go to Mexico, I would check around with the surf community. As you probably know, surfers are like addicts. I don’t think Joe could go long without hitting the waves. They are a tight nit community. Maybe???
Hey Mike, firstly, my heart is with you and your family and I truly hope that everyone is doing okay under the circumstances! I truly hope that your brother is found and that Summer and kids are okay! I’m trying to get my head around the case and was wandering how much fuel was left in the car when it was found!? Is there any chance that they stopped and refueled on the way!? More so, has anyone been keeping an eye on their postage for any traffic fines!? Also, did anyone ever find out where the toys were initially bought and does the toys have any significance to you or your family!?

This case has been such a great mystery and my heart has been with the family and their loved ones. I’m glad to see the story in the media. Someone must know something. I wish more public resources would go to help this family.

I’m going to reiterate this here as it seems to be read. Many “suggestions” are useless as the police know their jobs well. One, however, has been mentioned nowhere thus far: checking S. Calif natural remedies & herbal stores with their pic. Summer was looking for just that to calm down “anger” issues. Kava is the best thing for that and now hard to find (especially strong enough Kava) in the US. She made calls and was adamant. She would have looked around too. And when she would have had no luck, she would have been referred to MX! The way people do it is: park near the border, walk across. Most pharmacies and herbal remedies store can be visited and one can return to their car within the hour! Seems to fit… Just a thought as I can’t put this story and these people’s faces behind me. I apologize for wasting your time if it has been considered.
what a sad mystery. One thing is certain…they are somewhere,and someone out there must know something.
We have a girl missing here in Texas, her phone last pinged North of town, but someone could have taken her phone and it was with that person when it pinged. Immediately after the phone pinged it was turned off or smashed, never found the phone.
This is a very sad case. Joey and Mikey lived in Texas for a while and the friends they had in Texas are saddened by this. We hope and pray a clue will lead to them.
I think that some elements were overlooked. Food left shows that they left hastily, there were no signs of forced entry to the house and we can’t determine who was inside the truck. First of all, the threats made had to be sufficient and verified in order for them to be scared away, someone would not leave on empty threats. There was presumably no one else than the 4 inside the house prior to them leaving meaning that the threat came from some distance, they had to be from someone who knows them. If they have been threatened from within the house they would had to have let the suspect come in ( again a known person). The business partner who last spoke to Joseph is of high interest to me as the last person he spoke to…. I think that the person who forced them into leaving, which is the most plausible theory, knew them well. I think that Joseph was not as transparent as his family make him look. I don’t buy the wife alias either, that her name be Connie or Elizabeth doesn’t change anything to the story but only if she is fluent in Spanish. I believe the toys were bought to distract the kids while they stayed at a third place between their house and Mexico, if they were bought with cash, it’ll leave no traces and the one who was with them knows that all too well. I believe that there is a lot covered here!!!
I live in San Ysidro and I just wanted to stay I have seen a women walking around that bears a great deal to Summer. This was about 6 months ago. But as I am watching the I.D. episode I just remember seen her. I am being sincere but I am not 100% it was her. I seen her walking along Howard St. in front of Nicoloff School. And another time at the market on Dairy Mart Road and San Ysidro Blvd. called Niegbors. I was in a rush both times. She was alone and I did hear her speak in spanish. So I hope this may lead to something….My heart goes out to the family and I pray they can be found!!
Were the family’s passports left at the home or were they also missing? If I’m not mistaken u cannot enter Mexico without one. If they had entered Mexico would it not be document by Mexican immigration?
I am watching the show “Disappeared” right now I believe this is the first run of the episode to feature the McStays. I hope it brings in some credible leads and we get some answers. I can only offer a prayer
I saw a show on TV this past weekend featuring the McStay family. Wow, I am really sad and shocked that an entire family can just come up missing without anybody seeing or knowing anything. This is scary. I hope they all can be found safe and secure.

I would like to know where “Summer’s” family is. Why did she have all of those Aliases and did she have any other children? Something is NOT right about her. I think that she already spoke fluent spanish before she purchased Rosetta Stone. There would be absolutely NO WAY that a man would leave his other Child. How come their house had nothing much as far as furniture if he made $20k per month? Were they planning on leaving for a while before they actually did vanish? Did his family really have a good relationship with him? Oh and why would Michael McStay wait for 11 days to file a missing person report?
From what i can read from photos and family comments the key is the wife. She is running from something in the past. My gut says one of the children may not belong to joe, she may have been conducting illegal activities with joe’s cash or possibly as simple as she or joe ran someone over in hit and run. They are running and are alive…
I feel more than ever that they are alive and are hiding in Mexico, and I pray that they stay safe and free from danger should that truly be the case. For him to be doing as well as he was in the “Fountain” Business, when the economy was/is as bad as it is? That right there, and Summer doesn’t work? Come on! My instinct right from the very first mention of his business, was that he’d gotten in over his head, maybe skimming from the top, who knows. Hell, it’s possible to move damn near a ton of cocaine in one fountain, you could make the whole damn thing out of it. If you were and you needed to be ready to leave at a moments notice, no better way to do it than to just slip across the border. Leave everything, every cent. You can get what you need there, especially medications. You would have to go with what you could carry on your back. Leave the car at the border? Absolutely! You could easily wear a money belt, heck everyone in the family could. They wouldn’t be able to contact anyone, and the area of Fallbrook (as I’ve lived there) has more than one person involved in the drug business living there. It’s a beautiful area, absolutely beautiful and a quick drive to Mexico. I can’t think of anything else that makes any sense. Nothing. I feel certain they will let their family know somehow, that they are alive, as soon as they are able. God, I hope I’m right. It’s so sad to want to be right that someone dealt drugs or was involved in the biz, as apposed to the other option, which for me is simply unthinkable. God Bless the entire family, I pray they are given peace.
No, CS, it’s a good thought, but you don’t need one to enter Mexico. Hell, there is barely any surveillance at the border, just that camera that doesn’t even have a zoom or light or anything, it’s ridiculous actually considering the whole immigration issue. You don’t even have to have a passport to go to Jamaica. At least you didn’t last time I went, things change so quickly. I actually fear these broadcasts about the McStays. I worry that they did have to run, that he’d gotten in over his head and they bailed, had to, and that now they are trying to keep people from knowing who they are somewhere in Mexico until they think it’s safe (if ever) to come back or let the family know. When people say that someone is close with their family so would never just leave without letting them know? They aren’t thinking clearly. Of course we would. To keep ourselves, wife/husband, and kids, alive? And the last thing you can do is let anyone know, you’d be putting their life in danger as well.
Again, this is just my belief as to what happened. Or my hope I guess.
Their is a world renowned psychic named Sylvia Brown whom is known for telling if people who have been missing, are or are not alive.
I highly recommend her, just Google her and find a way to contact her,

I agree with the observation about the house having barely any furniture, 20k/ month but no furniture to make your life confortable is odd, unless this was a temporary alibi. Could they already have owned a place in Mexico? Could they have been preparing themselves knowing they would have to at some point abandon their lifes. Is she the one on the run for some innocent reason? And the aliases were to protect her? And when her husband became aware he knew he had to get his family to a safe place?
I think that over a period of time they had been transfering income to Mexico, ready for when Summer could no longer sustain her Aliases. I disagree with those who say they are in a Surf town, when your family is in trouble you give up your passion even if it is surfing. I think they are inland where its less populated.
The thing I keep coming back to is the dogs. Anyone who has a pet will agree with me on this – that for a person to leave their dogs behind with no provisions or plan for their care would have had to either 1) been taken against their will or 2) been in a position where they had to choose between the safety of themselves and their children and the welfare of their pets – a choice no one would ever want to be in a position to have to make! Their poor family must just be beside themselves. I don’t know what I would do in this situation. I think it would consume me day and night until I found out the truth. My thoughts and prayers are with all the McStays.
I live in South Africa, last night they played the E! investigates special, and i must say i was left rather spooked as to what happened to the family, this morning i saw the episode of disappeared that was about the McStay family.
there are so many things that just dont make sense to me, i would like to think the family is alive but one will never know. i dont believe a man would just leave without his other son nor would a family thats family orientated leave behind their pets without asking someone to care for them.
there is alot of media coverage about this case as well, so surely someone from the ROSS store will remember ringing up those toys that were bought by the family they might not remember the family but surely they would remember that purchase cause it was rather large toys…just a thought.
im especially concerned about the 2 young boys they must be so scared and confused as to why they havent heard from their grandparents, aunts-uncles or any relatives and esp why they away from their 2 dogs and why they not returning. its a very scary thought but i sincerely pray that God may watch over them and guide them back to safety.
its weird that after so long no one has come forward with any information at all no sightings or tip offs, i pray that a huge break comes soon.
well its a very heartbreaking mystery and one that i will follow very closely, i send my thoughts, prayers to the families all the way from Africa, and i pray that one day you find the answers that you desperately are searching for.

This story haunts me for so many reasons……I’m not sure my brother would look for me for two years ? I want to thank him for being so committed and loving for his brotherly concern.
There must be someone out there that can get the boarder video better enhanced ? At one point it looks like the first child looks back at the woman and other child, that should be worked with to get a better view. If we can fly in space we should be able to improve the picture quality. Any ideas out ther friends working in that field ?
Plus the birthmark on little Josephs face, people would remember seeing that. It’s sad and strange visual sittings of him are too few.
The dog issue I’m not giving any weight to. I work in the REO biz and I’m sad to say I find pets locked up in foreclosed homes all the time. I’ve had to foster many that were well trained, healthy and obviously loved and then abandoned. It comes down to a matter of survival, doing what must be done for the family. Pets, even well loved ones, become a burden when the family is emotionally drained. With that said however most are given food & water bowls.
The thing that sticks in my mind most is that they must beware the family that was left behind is frantic! Even if on the run a letter, call or hidden message would be the normal and compassionate thing to expect.
In my heart of hearts I feel foul-play was involved, if you toss everything out the window and go back to common sense the case sounds dire.
My thoughts are with them all. Having unanswered questions can drive you crazy and I hope one day soon they all find resolve one way or another.

i just saw this today on E omg how sad. I went online to see if there was any updates I was so hoping that everyone was found fine and good and there waqs a easy explanation to everythin but yet nothing. So heartbreaking. I am so sorry and I will say prayers for your family tonite the God would somehow give you answers and hopefully your dear family will be okay. Sometimes I wish I didnt watch TV. So I was sitting here thinking again, like everyone else here. When it occurred to me, that even though my feeling about this has been that (let me say first, this is not an insult and I know how awful this must sound to have to hear from anyone, that your brother, his wife or both, were involved in something more than u knew. The people that I’ve known who made some extra money or all of their income came from, dealing pot, were/awesome ppl, but the further u go up the chain, is where some pretty unsavory characters live. Anyhow, what I realized is that whether someone abducted them which seems impossible to believe considering the cameras that could have been programmed to not turn on. For a period of time and only they would know about the cameras so it would have had to be him or her, if it was done at all, but no matter how u slice it, he had to be involved in something not good because ppl aren’t just kidnapped or disappear unless they have enemies somewhere. So doesn’t it make more sense that they ran. Didn’t want to make it look like they packed up and lft, so lv it all as it isand just go. Lv the car we have another on the other side waiting, all prearranged easily by throwaway cellls or any other number of options. This clearly wasn’t a home invasion. I’m sure they lft food and water for their dogs and expected someone would see they were hungry, hear them bark, whatevr, and take care of them b4 ten days passed, if they ran out of foood and water it is likely at a certain point they’d do something as dogs do, with their bowls or what not. The toys? Either they got them and lft the kids with someone they really trusted and got the toys too if it was something they cldnt find in MX) someone may be helping them here and isn’t about to endanger their safety more by ltg family members know. Your brother is a “man with the plan” type of guy I can tell and too intelligent in what I feel from him to not have this ready well in advance. And as I’ve read from others that it was possible it is all about Summer really, and if she was hiding witness protection, fake identity, then that wld mean these would be some pretty heavy hitters to be involved with if either murder or the mad dash had to take place. And when ppl r killed, in moost cases since its so rare (that we know of) that those kind of ppl that may abduct a family? A hit maybe, but take them, and do away with them? Makes no sense. This wasn’t a robbery.and if she was inwitness pro, then clearly your bro would go with you, and I happen to know? That is exactly what it is like, how its done when u r. I pray they let u know they r alive someway soon, course if u just. Suddenly to shut up? Some ppl would start. To wonder what u know that they don’t, so again, he wouldn’t be able to contact u. They r. Alive, I feel it, but they cannot tell u, and the more the media, the harder it becomes for them to stay unrecognized WP or not. All my prayers.
